Your closet should reflect your lifestyle. Building your wardrobe is not just about style and color, it also needs to be functional. When you evaluate the activities and events you need to dress for on a regular basis you’re able to make wise decisions of what to purchase.
When I taught elementary school, I chose items that were comfortable, professional and would last through a school year of sitting on the floor, paint and glue projects, and accidental lunch spills from cafeteria duty.
As a Stylist and owner of House of Colour Frisco, I enjoy wearing my best colors in clothes that allow me to express the woman that I am that can take me from seeing clients, hopping on a zoom call to conduct a training and dash to meet my husband for dinner.
Investment shopping is more important to me now and I have learned to buy less, choose well and make what I purchase last longer. I’ve learned to avoid trends, and invest in classics that will serve me well year round.
So when I was invited to attend the Miss & Mrs. Texas International Pageant as an official sponsor, I realized that the dress code would be formal , glitzy and pageant ready.
Presently, there are no long formal gowns hanging in my closet. My options included buying something with a starting price of possibly $350 , which would then hang in my closet never to be worn again. I then learned of another option and turned to an alternative of renting.
Rent the Runway is an e-commerce platform that allows users to rent, subscribe, or buy designer apparel and accessories. It was founded by Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Fleiss, who launched the company in November 2009.
The process is very easy, shop online from an extensive inventory of clothes for weddings, dinner outs, office essentials, and weekend getaways. Accessories are also available. I also love the idea of renting an item such as a heavy winter coat when traveling to an area with inclement weather instead of making a purchase for an item that doesn’t fit into the environment that you live in the rest of the year.
Pictures are below from my invoice, I was able to use a first time renter code that allowed me to select several gowns with back up sizes for a low cost. When I take in consideration the time to go to several stores, and shopping online, I feel that my odds are better with renting for this one time a year event.
These gowns average the retail cost of $650 and up. Stay posted for a future blog sharing which dress I chose and how I styled it for the event.
I hope this blog gives you an option in choosing an item for that special event where you want to look like a million bucks but prefer to spend less.
